MediaTek to Open New Chip Design Center in the United States

 Taiwan-based fabless chipmaker MediaTek recently announced that it will establish a new U.S. chip design center within Purdue University in Indiana, the United States, and dispatch a new design team stationed on campus, the Economic Daily News reported on June 30. With a state transition assistance package reportedly worth US$1.4 million from the Indiana Economic Development Commission over the next three years, the MediaTek/Purdue University design center is set to recruit 30 engineers by 2025, along with up to 10 graduate student interns. The company has been working with other U.S. universities for more than a decade with a total R&D investment worth US$3.5 billion in 2021 alone. The first cohort of interns are expected to join this new design center in May 2023. 

Shipment value of the Taiwanese semiconductor industry is estimated to grow by 17.5% year-on-year to around NT$4.36 trillion (US$146.8 billion; US$1=NT$29.7) in 2022, NT$1.27 trillion (US$42.8 billion) of whichm will be contributed by the fabless IC industry, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a major government think tank and one of leading IT research institutes in Taiwan. Established in 1987, MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute) is a division of III (Institute for Information Industry).
